Traits System Guide

The Traits system is the most important build layer added to Kaiju Universe in 2026. It shipped as part of Doomsday Update 7.0.0 and sits on top of skill points. This guide explains the categories, how Traits stack, and how to slot them into the three new kaiju and your existing main.

For the broader patch context, read the Doomsday Update 7.0.0 breakdown. For event pressure testing, see the Military Invasion boss event. To plan skill points alongside Traits, use the Skill-point planner.

What Traits are

Traits are persistent modifiers that change how a kaiju’s kit performs. They are not a side-stat you can ignore — the Military Invasion event and the entire 7.0.0 balance pass were tuned around them. A Trait pick:

  • Anchors an identity. Traits that match your kaiju’s fantasy amplify what the kit already does.
  • Reshapes windows. Traits can extend or compress stagger windows, DoT ticks, or pressure windows.
  • Affects resource use. Trait-aware play uses less stamina per minute because the windows are cleaner.

The system is opt-in but the meta assumes you engage with it. Traitless play is still viable in low-density lobbies; in coordinated content it falls behind.

Trait categories

Traits fall into four categories. Pick one as your primary and one as your secondary, then react with situational swaps:

  • Pressure traits — amplify stagger and force bosses to skip mechanics. Best for Akujin, pressure tanks, and frontliners.
  • DoT traits — multiply damage-over-time ticks, keep pressure during stagger windows. Best for Fyrnalis and any fire-aligned fantasy.
  • Survival traits — extend stamina economy and damage reduction windows. Best for pressure-trait roles that need to live through phase three.
  • Ambush traits — boost opener windows, ambush damage, and pre-stagger pressure. Best for Carnabas and kaiju with single-hit openers.

Pick categories that align with your kaiju’s fantasy before you optimize for raw stats.

How Traits stack

Traits have three layers:

  1. Primary slot — always active, hard-coded to your kaiju’s recommended category.
  2. Secondary slot — selectable from the remaining categories, lower multiplier, supports the primary.
  3. Resonance — when primary and secondary share a fantasy keyword (fire, shadow, bleed), you unlock a small resonance bonus.

Resonance is the cleanest way to spike your kaiju’s damage profile. Most 7.0.0 builds start by locking the resonance pair, then layering skill points to fill the open windows.

Trait picks for the three new kaiju

  • AkujinPrimary pressure, secondary survival. Use the roar-cancel drill to keep the pressure window active.
  • FyrnalisPrimary DoT, secondary pressure. Use mid-range control to land DoT ticks without exposing yourself.
  • CarnabasPrimary ambush, secondary pressure. Save the opener for stagger windows rather than opening cold.

The above is the cleanest first-week build. After a phase-three clear in Military Invasion, revisit and respec if the report screen suggests a different primary.

Pairing Traits with skill points

Skill points still drop every five levels. The 7.0.0 overhaul changed passive stacking, so use the Skill-point planner to:

  • Anchor passives that complement your Trait primary, not duplicate it.
  • Avoid stacking stats that your Trait secondary already amplifies.
  • Save respec currency for the first time your Trait pick shifts after a phase-three clear.

The first time you change Trait pick is the right time to re-spend skill points. Until then, hold.

Common mistakes

  1. Chasing raw stat Traits instead of identity Traits. Pressure traits look small on paper but pay off in stagger windows.
  2. Ignoring the secondary slot. A resonant secondary is a free multiplier that most players leave on the table.
  3. Respeccing after one bad run. Trait effects need at least two phase-two clears and one phase-three clear before you judge them.
  4. Skipping the report screen. The new report screen surfaces which Trait contributed most to your damage — use it as a build diagnostic.

Pairing with other hubs

Traits are the most important build layer added in 2026. Use them as identity multipliers, plan around resonance, and let the Military Invasion report screen tell you when to respec.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Kaiju Universe players.

How many Traits can I slot at once?

Two by default — a primary and a secondary. Resonance bonuses unlock when primary and secondary share a fantasy keyword.

Do Traits replace skill points?

No. Traits sit on top of skill points. Use both layers together for the cleanest 7.0.0 builds.

How do I unlock new Trait categories?

Trait tokens drop from the Military Invasion event and from milestone missions. Spend them via the new Traits menu.

Can I respec my Trait picks?

Yes, but currency is tight in week one. Wait for the Military Invasion report screen to flag the right time to respec.

Should I pick Traits before or after skill points?

Pick Traits first so your skill-point spending reinforces the same fantasy. Re-spend skill points only after a Trait swap.
